Why the dipole moment of HF is greater than that of HI??

發問:

just as the question mentioned above 更新: The model answer states as follows : F is more eletronegative than I . the effect of increase in eletronegativity outweighs the effect of increase in internuclear distance (size) . What means by that ? Thank You !

最佳解答:

because F is more electronegative than I greater attraction between H and F than H and I 2007-07-28 13:35:20 補充: normally, increase the internuclear distance have greater moment element down the group should have greater dipole moment 2007-07-28 13:35:40 補充: however, in the case of HFF is the most electronegative element so the effect of increase in eletronegativity outweighs the effect of increase in internuclear distance ("outweighs" is the key word) 2007-07-28 13:36:25 補充: i.e. the effect of increase in eletronegativity is the main reason for this question & cancel out the effect of increase in internuclear distance
